About Us

Just imagine, sitting in a college workshop class to learn how to make beehives; and 15 years later you own a kettle corn and distribution business that spans across 7 states with 6 distributors. Mike wanted to learn how to build hives and ended up falling in love with Beekeeping. In 2010, he started Great Plains Honey Farms in which he supplied several grocery stores and Farmer's Markets in Central Nebraska as well as his own storefront in Grand Island.

Mike and Rhoda met in 2014, together they built the honey business. Through their travels they learned about GROW Nebraska. With both Mike and Rhoda being new to the world of all the logistics of starting and growing a business THE RIGHT WAY, this ended up being the smartest decision they made. Part of the membership was the Nebraska State Fair. Now we are coming around to the kettle corn.

In 2016, sampling honey was going well and we were sampling with other GROW Nebraska members. While listening to and talking to others, this started Mike's wheels turning. We walked the midway and saw the excitement and lines for kettle corn. We purchased a few different bags from different vendors to see what all the hype was all about. Boy was there a difference in taste, texture, after taste, hulls, and sluff left in the bottom of the bags. Over the next few months, Mike and Rhoda (mostly Mike) experimented with oils, corns, sugars, combinations, measurements, and samplings and finally came up with GOLD DUST KETTLE CORN.

We were so proud to finally have it all perfected. We popped in a little popper waiting for our kettle to come. Our kettle popped one bag at a time. At that time we would set out with 20 bags. Then our kettle arrived and we had been taken by the company that supposedly made it. It was not at all what it was supposed to be. Mike now became a Kettle maker. He was able to rebuild it and away we went. No more one bag at a time, we were up to a case of 12 bags at a time. Long story short, we now put out over 100 cases/ week of just the Classic Kettle Corn.

After having issues with distributing, Mike and Rhoda decided that they would take an active roll in this aspect as well. No one is going to take as much pride in their product as they do. They work hand-in-hand with another of their distributors and offer a wide variety of products along with their GOLD DUST KETTLE CORN, thus was born 1829, LLC. 1829, LLC currently runs Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado.
